Visit to Yelverton Shops – August 2018
For the 2018 RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend, the Shops at Yelverton were challenged to ‘go all 1940s’ and vie to win the RAF Harrowbeer Memorial Trophy, for the ‘Best Dressed’ shop. The shops were asked to decorate themselves in a 1940s theme, and that should include the staff getting into costume too! And didn’t they do well! Myself and Flight Sergeant Bailey went over to have a look and see what they been up to. It was also a chance for me to introduce myself.
Before we even got to the shops we ran into this little chap, who was having a spot of lunch with his Grandad and Grandma during a day out. His name is Henry so this is ‘When Harry met Henry!’
First up was Mansbridge & Balment. They turned their premises into the ‘Air Raid Warden’s Post’!
Complete with a room dedicated as an Air-Raid Shelter.
Next along was Chris Hambly (SAAB Dealer) and his team.
Next up it’s the Cutting Company! F/S Bailey thought I needed a quick trim. Well I do need to look my best for the public.
My visit created quite a stir! But then I am such a handsome little bear aren’t I? Look at all those lovely hairstyles.
Next door is The Game Larder. All the staff were dressed for the occasion and standing in what was the original doorway of No.6 Moorland Villas. The shop-front is built over the garden (so I was told) and when you go up to order food, you are actually stepping through what was the front room window. When they were decorating, they uncovered an original fireplace too!
Next stop is Vieira’s Cafe & Bistro. Codie was keen to show me the menu. All looked nice but I have to watch my figure!
Next along is the Co-op at Yelverton. Their window has lots of interesting things to see, from identity cards, to booklets on the Battle of Britain.
Next along is Bidders the Butchers. Wasn’t sure I liked being served up on a silver salver held by a pig, but what the heck!
We also popped in to see Nigel and his team in Yelverton Garage, plus we had a brief chat with Tony and the staff of Manning & Co.
So….take a trip to Yelverton and see the shops all decked out with their flags, bunting and artefacts. We will be announcing the winner of the ‘Best Dressed Shop’ on Saturday afternoon at around 3.30pm, just before the Spitfire Experience Draw. On behalf of the RAF Harrowbeer 1940s Committee, can I say a huge ‘Thank you’ to everyone for taking part and putting so much effort into the event. And another thank you to those who have donated prizes for the Spitfire Experience Draw.
That’s all for now!
