Stonehenge Visit – October 2017
Last Saturday, (22nd October) I went on a trip to Stonehenge. It truly is an amazing place and it is hard to imagine how it was built. High up on a ridge, there was no protection from the rain showers and the wind….and boy was it windy! Nearly lost my cap on several occasions. Here are a few photos from my visit.
Stonehenge under grey skies. It was just about to chuck it down!
The Sun did come out though and this is me in front of the Monument.
You aren’t allowed in amongst the stones anymore so this is as close as I could get.
Be careful walking around they said……………
………and then I went and tripped over a dandelion!
Still, no harm done…..just a bit of a muddy nose.
We walked all the way around the stones and this was me and my minders posing for a ‘selfie’.
I just had to have one more look before we went back to the Visitor Centre for a cuppa.
Just outside the Visitor Centre, is this poignant memorial to two RFC Pilots, who were the first RFC casualties back in 1912.
And this is their memorial Cross.
Their story is told on a nearby interpretation board.
Here’s another view of the board. It refers to the ‘Airman’s Cross’, which is what I am sitting beside in the earlier picture. It is also the name of the roundabout at the entrance to the Stonehenge Monument. I wonder how many people each day, see the name on the roundabout and wonder who the airman were?
A sad reminder of how dangerous flying was in those early days.
Bye for now.
