Museum of Army Flying Visit – October 2017
So we were driving back from London on the A303 when we saw a sign for the Museum of Army Flying. Having never heard of it before, we decided to take a detour to go and explore it. Well it was well worth the trip because it’s a very extensive museum. Lots of exhibits to do with how the Army operates in battle, using gliders during WWII and later with helicopters. It is based beside Middle Wallop airfield, which we were all interested in because during WWII, this airfield was part of No.10 Group, along with RAF Harrowbeer. (N.B. Middle Wallop started as part of No.11 Group but was transferred to No.10 Group. I have added a link to the Airfield’s history)
We had a wander round outside as it was a lovely day and there were a few things to look at, including this:
A DHC-2 Beaver aircraft. This one needs some TLC I think!
There were some memorials to look at. This one is for the Glider Pilot Regiment.
And this huge circular wall one, covered with names, dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the service of Army Flying.
Now we’ll go inside…….
This is a Miles Magister. We had these at Harrowbeer….
This Chipmunk aircraft is a bit newer.
Now here’s something a bit more like it for me! An engine to look at. Now where’s my tools!
I get to sit in the front seat for once. Engine run-up test anyone?
There were several Glider exhibits. This is just one of them….
There are more exhibits upstairs, including the layout of rooms representing a 1940s house…..
This is the front room.
Then I peeked into the bedroom!
There is also a kitchen and bathroom but too difficult to photograph unfortunately but the ‘garden’ section was quite good.
If you look really, really closely, you’ll spot a little Teddy Bear in flying costume! These chaps are hiding all round the museum for the youngsters to look for whilst going round with their Parents.
Then I thought I’ll have a go at a clever ‘selfie’!
There is only a small exhibit about Middle Wallop as a Battle of Britain, No.10 Group Fighter Station.
Then it was time for a cuppa……and a chance to see a bit of flying.
Bye for now! See you next time.
